Behind The Lens

Location

I am often out keeping my young lady company whilst she does her botany surveys and take the chance to see new areas and photograph what I can find, this is on of those occasions.

Time

This was taken towards the end of the day amongst vegetation, late February in good light.

Lighting

The light was low at the end of the day, but a clear sky and illuminating the subject to give a warm diffused glow radiating from the surrounding vegetation. Hence the nice green background.

Equipment

My Pentax K3 and sigma 70mm macro lens with monopod and ball head.

Inspiration

The simplicity of the composition and the great light giving the soft contrast of the green against the fly. I also took an overhead record shot so that I could identify the fly later.

Editing

Most of the processing was to control noise as this was a JPEG on best quality settings, which unfortunately showed up a lot of salt and pepper noise at 100%.

In my camera bag

I now have a Pentax K3, K3 II, Pentax 50mm f1.8, 35mm macro, 100mm macro, 16-50, 50-135, 65-250 and sigma 70mm macro. With Giottos CF tripod, gitzo CF monopod and Lowepro and Manfrotto camera bags.

Feedback

Composition and light are everything and where ever possible try to keep it as simple and uncluttered as possible. Macro requires a lot of patience and frustration so it is important that you are never afraid to fail, but persevere and enjoy.
