Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken from the Blauwburgwal, Amsterdam

Time

On a cold wintermorning, on my way at work, the canals were frozen for a few days by then and I had taken my camera with me for the purpose of shooting them. Unfortunataly this spot was visited by a icerusherboat, which ruined my initial plans. However the ever so enlightened Johan Cruijff (rip) said it before... ieder nadeel heb z'n voordeel (or visa versa) .. nevertheless this 'bad luck' provided me with the advantage to shoot this quite rare momentum. And I'm glad this is how it happened!

Lighting

The light was 'wintery'. Hazy, diffused, clouded, at moments somewhat sunny. A bit of everything and changing quite rapidly.

Equipment

This one was shot with a Nikon D90 with a 10-20 Sigma lens. Graduated filter.

Inspiration

Well, winter and frozen canals. That you don't see very often anymore. A somewhat Burtonesque scene in Amsterdam under "Rembrandtish" circumstances that does not want anything else but me taking pictures of it...

Editing

Yeah of course. It was not a single shot, but three shots because otherwise I could not have captured it as wide (and high in resolution) as it is now. Stitched together and after that I did some finetuning - but not too subtle please :-) - with the saturation, coloring, contrast, local boosts (in the sky) etc. I wanted it to get this 'old', yet timeless feel.

In my camera bag

at the time a Nikon D90, Sigma 10-20

Feedback

I have very little advise. Maybe don't do what I do. I like to shoot from the hip and handle my gear and techniques 'guerilla-style'. Photography for me is wrestling with reality - and reality flies by at 60 seconds per minute - therefor I want my equipment and my techniques (and myself) to be able to quick and dirty, ready at all time and it's got to withstand a bump.
