Thai schools almost always have dogs present because of their Buddhist orienta tion to protect animals. The schools provide vet services and food and usually it works are quite well. :) Every morning Thai schools have morning assembly for prayer, singing the national anthem, raising flag, and announcements. It is quite nice. :)

All Thai students from grades 1-9 participate in mandatory scouting program. Once a week they wear their scouting uniforms to school.

Dear Amanda: Being a Buddhist nation, Thailand is quite good for some values on the school front. Some that I loved: morning prayers, salute to flag and national anthem at assembly, mandatory scouting for both boys and girls, dogs at school, and monks that visit to lecture on religion and morality. Children are taught that the King, monks and teachers have the high ground in social standing. Quite refreshing! :) :)

Kids at this school come mostly from poor families. Inspite of that, they are living a good life, probably more rich than American boys and girls who have every advantage. :)

As a Buddhist nation, Thailand does a lot to protect dogs. If you want to get rid of a dog in a humane way take it to a school or temple and it will be cared for. At a large, high quality public high school where I taught, there were 25 dogs maintained by the school for food and vet services. As good as that sounds, it wasn't all peaches and cream, one of the dogs was a biter (got me twice), larger dogs grabbed food from students, they climbed up on lunch tables and licked the table top, and fornicated at the most awkward times. This picture was from a small primary school in rural area, not too many dogs around and they were all well behaved. I thought this photo quite amazing myself in telling a nice little Norman Rockwell story! :)

A wonderful capture Larry. This shot tells a great story. As a scout leader in New Zealand I found it interesting that scouting in Thailand is mandatory. Thanks for the information (and cute image).

Hello Diana: Thanks for your note. I felt happy about this photograph, a rare occasion. For the past several years I've been a parttime volunteer teacher at a small country school in Thailand. One of my rewards has been many precious photographs of children playing in their world. Wishing you all the best, careful of that skydiving! Happy Easter, Larry
