Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a hike to Blue Lake in Ward, Colorado. It's part of Brainard Lake Rec area. It's about an hour and a half from Denver up in the Rocky Mountains.

Time

We started our hike about 7am on a Saturday. I like getting an early start because it provides some of the best natural light. I try to use as much natural light as possible. We had hiked about an hour when we came to this creek.

Lighting

The sun was coming through the trees at the perfect moment. I turned while I was walking and just had to get a picture.

Equipment

I use a Canon 5D Mark ii with my 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS lens. I didn't need a flash because of all the light. I was balancing on a log we were crossing the creek on.

Inspiration

We were hiking along and I could see the sun was at the perfect angle coming through the trees. When we were crossing the creek I turned up creek and saw the light streaming through the branches. I had my camera around my neck and snapped several different angles. It just looked like such a serene place that animals would come to the creek to drink.

Editing

With this photo I increased the highlights to brighten it up a little bit and upped the clarity. I also increased the saturation to enhance the green. I didn't have to do much else, I didn't want to over process it because it showed how natural it was out on the trail.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D Mark ii body, my 50mm 1.4 lens, my 70-300 1:4-5.6 IS lens, my 430EX speedlight, misc cords, my battery charger, remote and lot's of memory cards. Right now I use a Jo Tote backpack but plan to upgrade to something that holds more because I need another lens and camera body.

Feedback

I'm lucky to live near the Rocky Mountains. There is just so much to see and I've only scratched the surface. Look around, you never know what you might see. Don't be afraid to take pictures of everything. I've snapped away and only when I downloaded them to my computer I find images I didn't realize I captured. Its a combination of luck and skill. Don't give up.
