Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured off of my porch in Fort Worth, Texas during the 2015 Super Moon Eclipse.

Time

That evening I knew I wanted to capture the eclipse but wasn't sure if I was even going to be able to see it. As you can see, at the bottom of the image, it started off very cloudy that night, but as the moon rose in the sky, it began to clear. Eventually, I had a clear view of the whole eclipse. I captured images of this event starting at 830pm until 1230am; it was amazing to see, but the best part of all was being able to capture it and creating this unique sequence of events to share with others.

Lighting

These images were all lit by the natural light of the moon; it did get a bit difficult for focusing as the moon got smaller and smaller.

Equipment

For this shoot I used a Canon 5d MarkIII, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens, Canon Remote Switch, and a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I was inspired to try something new, I generally only did portraiture up until about a year ago when I started capturing nature/landscape images. Also, since I have never watched a full eclipse of the moon before I decided to just give it a try.

Editing

Yes, I did do post processing, I boosted the clarity, some dodging and burning. Then I created a composite out of all the cycles of the eclipse. Of course, this was not planned as I was shooting the moon it just fell together as it somehow always does in post processing. As I was designing the composite, I went through the images picking out the best image for the next phase of the moon. I actually love the way it all came together.

In my camera bag

My go to equipment a Canon 5D MarkIII, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, Manfrotto monopod, and tripod.

Feedback

To capture an image like this, you definitely need time, patience, a tripod and a remote switch to be able to capture it clearly. I thoroughly believe in trying something new because you never know what is possible until you try! And if you don't succeed on your first time that is ok because you can always try again and again until you get what you want.
