Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at VOLT Festival, Hungary during the SKILLET concert.

Time

It was a midday but the concert was lit very beautifully. At first I didn't like this photo but after watching it for a few minutes I changed my mind.

Lighting

I just wanted to take some good shots. I put my shutter mode to continuous and pushed the button. At a concert you can't predict where the lights will be, I was lucky, I guess.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 7D Mark II with a 50mm f/1.8 lens as I remember but it could have been taken with a Canon 55-250mm. I used no flash or tripod. At a concert, you don't have space for tripod and it's useless. Also, you shouldn't use flash because it might distract the artist, unless the band lets you use a flash.

Inspiration

I want to be a concert photographer and I had the chance to go to this festival for free. I knew that SKILLET will play at the festival (I like their music) and I went to the stage and shot from the crowd. I was at the first line and John Cooper came down the stage and gave high fives to the fans. I got one, too. :)

Editing

Yes, I used Lightroom for post-processing. I didn't do too much with it, just raised the level of contrast and I did some other small corrections.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 7D Mark II, Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, Canon 50mm f/1.8, a Canon 100mm f/2.8 and my analog camera and some lens for it. Of course, I have one battery if the other dies and some memory cards

Feedback

I would say, go with a fix lens that's also good in low light. Shoot at least with a 1/500 shutter speed and don't be afraid to use high ISO! Try to capture a lot of moments because you never know which photo is useable. And the most important thing is to be creative at the moment of shooting. No matter if you are in the crowd or in front is the stage, you can always take good photos if you want!
