Location
This happened to be the tail end of a storm I was chasing. I ended up across the river from Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It’s a deceiving story really, see, the power was out across the river, and I knew I wanted to get to this clearing, but the road was partially closed off due to a downed tree. I explained to the officer I live down the road about a kilometer, and I really wanted to get home. After some negotiation, he let me go.Time
This was likely between 8-9pm in the evening. The lightening lit up the sky and clouds beautifully. Like I said this was the tail end of the storm that I had been chasing since about 630pm. I started at the other end of the county and ended up in the next county over.Lighting
Well, other than the lightning, not so much. I mean I was using long exposures, and the field was lit up by my car for a few seconds. I’ve never really photographed storms at night, but I figured they’d be similar to astral photography.Equipment
I used my Nikon D700 along with my Nikon 20mm f/2.8. I also used a semi-cheap manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I suppose you could say I inspired myself. Ever since shooting film, and developing my own negatives, I considered myself an experimental photographer. With that said, I always aim to photograph something new, or try a new technique, in regards to previous work of mine.Editing
I pretty much exposed for my foreground, the headlights would have burnt out the field, then I did two long exposure for the sky. I shot this in raw format, imported this into lightroom, created a stacked image, exported to a 32bit tiff file, then finished my processing in photoshop. In my camera bag
My bag usually consists, of my Nikon D700 along with my battery grip, my 50mm, lens filters for my landscapes, steel wool, rope, and a wire whisk. As well a Holga that has 120-film that I’m not sure I’ll ever develop anytime soon.Feedback
Well, I would say watch the weather radar, and try to execute your plan of action. Scout places on nice days and get a feel for your surroundings. Just observe them, and imagine what they would look like during a storm. Also be prepared to get wet, and always remember to leave the tripod in the car. Oh, and one more thing, have patience, never get down on yourself, and always have fun with it. Also pay no mind to other local photographers unless they inspire you, because at the end of the day in this age of social media, you’ll tend to get yourself down.
