The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a relatively new canyon in a geological span of time. It’s estimated that the river began eroding away at the walls of tuff, ash and pyroclastic materials just after the last eruption 640,000 years ago. The massive caldera remains active beneath the region and continues to boil up the ground water in an array of vents and geysers. While unpredictable on exactly when the next big eruption will occur, the last three have ranged between 600,000 and 800,000 years. Seems we’re due for another big event in the next few thousand years!
