Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in downtown Manhattan. Don't be fooled, this particular street was nearly never empty. It took a lot of patients to wait out the traffic. That combined with trying to get the timing of the two jumps made this particular shot very difficult to capture.

Time

This was taken at 12p on one of the hottest, muggiest NYC summer afternoons. My bag was filled with lenses and ice packs for my subjects.

Lighting

I prefer to always use natural light. Sometime you luck out and get nice cloud coverage, which I much prefer. My teacher used to call it "God's natural soft box"

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III and a telephoto lens at an extremely fast shutter speed to capture this shot.

Inspiration

I love shooting dancers and have been fortunate to make a decent living out of shooting them, but something about combining such a refined art with street "grunge" gets me excited. I'm constantly inspired by my surroundings and I love inserting my love of dance into them.

Editing

Yes, there are color adjustments and micro adjustments to the subjects.

In my camera bag

I always carry my camera, 50m lens, 24-70 and my telephoto. You can also find band aids and lots of water, along with a ton of granola bars. Photographers have to eat too!!

Feedback

Have tons of patience and always be open to new ideas. Work with your subjects and figure out their strengths in order to compose the frame. If you enjoy shooting dancers, try taking some classes. Being able to speak their language goes a long way!
