Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in Woolwich, NJ lit by natural light from a window.

Time

The photo was taken in early afternoon while light from the window was still fairly soft.

Lighting

The highlights are very much a product of the time of day and the angle of the sun coming through the window.

Equipment

This shot was done with a Canon 5D Mk3 and Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM lens shot at f/2.4, ISO100, at 1/30 sec. The digital file was processed and edited in Adobe Lightroom.

Inspiration

Having played guitar for many years I wanted to get a shot worthy of the guitar itself, a PRS Custom 22.

Editing

The post processing was all done in Adobe Lightroom. Adjusting for Hightlights, Shadows, a bit of Clarity and Saturation. Finally I applied a Radial gradient to darken the surrounding area outside of the guitar itself.

In my camera bag

These days my go to Camera is a Sony A7R2 and a Sigma 24-105mm F4 lens. I also frequently use a Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 lens. My final go to lens is a Tamron 20mm F2.8 for wide angle shots.

Feedback

I captured this photo very early in my photographic journey. These days I would go about it in a more controlled manner using Black VFlats on both sides of the guitar and a diffuser in front of the window to soften the light more. I would also take multiple shots with different focus points and then stack them in Photoshop to produce a better overall result.
