along the Lyell Highway huge poplars screen a remarkable timber giant, Shooters Hill oast house, on the edge of the predictably flat parcel of land by the river. The homestead was built in 1828 by Josiah Spode, grandson of the famous Staffordshire potter; its oast house is an evergreen with artists and photographers, fitting the classic pattern: hexagonal tower and drying area several stories high – also being overtaken by the elements. Facing west, the oast house stands where the road along the river originally ended on that bank, glowing in the late afternoon light until shaded by its own protecting poplars.
