Sun Beam in Antelope Canyon
This was a bitter sweet experience, Antelope Canyon is one of the most beautiful slot canyon in the world, very colorful and photogenic. It is also very difficult to photograph, you need a tripod and each shots are long exposures from the limited light inside the canyon. But what makes it very difficult and frustrating are the crowds inside. Antelope Canyon is owned and operated by the Navajo tribe and only accessible with a tour. there are two options, regular 1 hour tour at $40 or 2 hour photo tour at $80.
Your tour start either in the town of Page, Arizona, or at the canyon where you board a big jeep with huge wheels and hang on for a bumpy drive for 3 miles in deep soft sands. The best time of day for photos is between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, this is when the sun is directly over the canyon and sunbeams are visible. There are several tour companies and you get to share the narrow canyon with hundreds of people.
I was able to get a few good shots but many opportunities were lost with frustration. people walking in the shots, bumping my tripod...it is a zoo in there, very disorganized. Still a great place to see and i think it helps if you know what you are getting into.
This photo was done with a bit of crowd control and taken with the Canon EOS 6D and 17-40mm lens
