A surreal landscape highlighting the contrast between rough and smooth, and also opacity and reflection. It combines natural light with the presence of time to create an image that is rugged and calming, like the ocean itself.

My only criticism - the circular vignetting completely takes away from this image. A soft graduated grey filter brought down from the top of the image would work a whole lot better in my opinion. This is an absolutely remarkable image. The composition is spot on. And the tones are exquisite. The signature at the bottom is intrusive. Amazing image thank you for sharing.

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on a difficult to reach beach in northern California. It was definitely worth the hike, as this image shows a keen serenity that is both infatuating and calming. It was a very picturesque place.
Time
It was fairly early in the morning I suppose, and after sunrise, I don't remember the exact time but I had waited at this spot for a couple hours taking lots of images. It was a great day for pictures, and this was one of many that I shot that I definitely enjoy looking at.
Lighting
The lighting was crucial to my composition. I wanted it to have a surreal appearance with both opacity and reflection. The monolith served as a nice subject, and focal point, while I waited for the right time to get the perfect mixture of fog and tidal waves mixed into the scene. Luckily, there was a break in the fog from above and allowed a natural spotlight to assist me highlighting my subjects
Equipment
I used a Fujifilm X-T1 with a wide angle prime which is my staple setup. I also used a Manfrotto tripod to get a good footing on the sand while the camera took the image.
Inspiration
I was driving down the coast and came up on this particular part of the beach, and thought, wow! At that time the sun was just rising, and having a natural instinct I hoped out with my camera and began shooting some shots. But most of them seemed too "basic", so I thought about what would make them a bit more interesting. I hiked around this area and stumbled upon this nice rock scene. I loved how the large boulder took the stage in the composition, but wanted it to have more contrast. That's when I figured a slight time lapse would have the capability of highlighting the rock with a nice pale white wave. After several attempts to get the right time, everything seemed to line up for me and I caught it.
Editing
I'm not a big fan of post-processing, but for the overall composition of this image I decided to apply a slight vignetting to the scene. This was used to highlight the prime subject, and to also provide a nice blend between the black beach and the white fog on the horizon. It gives the picture a really surreal appearance, and it made a nice composition.
In my camera bag
I've become a big fan of Fuji cameras. They are really nice to use and give a high quality product. My bag is filled with a couple cameras and multiple lenses and filters. Of course my equipment would not be complete without my Manfrotto tripod.
Feedback
Pictures like these require the waiting game, and for this one, a nice warm jacket. I would recommend anyone wanting to capture something like this to plan ahead with what they might need, then wait for the right time. If you can imagine it, you can capture it. So long as you have enough patience :).
