I love the silent peaceful atmosphere in the polder of Kinderdijk with its impressive windmills. I grew up here. I like your picture!

Behind The Lens

Location

I visited some friends in Holland and coincidentally my first night in Holland was also the first night of the festival of lights In Kinderdijk. We walked the trails along the canals enjoying the lighting on all the windmills.

Time

It was late evening. The light in the distance was the glow of a nearby city.

Lighting

For others trying a shot like this one, I would suggest they avoid using the flash. It would have lit up the foreground too much and the dramatic lighting of the windmills in the distance wouldn't be there. I wanted the windmills to be the main subjects. Not the canal in front of me.

Equipment

I used a Sony Mavica FD. No tripod, no flash, just ambient lighting and an occasional balancing act on a post or railing. I didn't pack the tripod (it was rather bulky then..) for the flight from California to Amsterdam. For most of the shots I took that night, I let the auto-exposure on the camera make the choice.

Inspiration

Inspiration? The beauty of the night, the walk along the canals, the company of dear friends all combined to make a wonderful memory documented by my camera.

Editing

I didn't do any post processing. What you see is what I shot.

In my camera bag

I rarely carry the old Mavica anymore. It mostly sits on a shelf with my old 35mm cameras now. My current camera is a pocket-sized Canon SX720HS. It's a handy little camera with a good zoom. One of these days I may go shopping for a digital SLR.. Time will tell.

Feedback

The only advice I could give is to use a tripod or to use what is available where you are. If I remember right, this shot was taken by balancing the camera on a railing on a bridge over a canal. A lot of holding my breath and crossing my fingers to get a good shot. Night time shots like this don't need a flash.
