I'm a self taught amateur photographer, who as recently as a year ago had never picked up a camera. When my dad passed away last September a friend of mine suggested I pick it up as a tool to help me cope with the overwhelming grief. To my delight not only did I love it, but I found it came naturally to me. This shot was taken in my front yard. I had been on a walk earlier that day and I came upon some mega huge dandelions. I thought they would be perfect for a macro photography session!Time
I took this shot on a grey evening in June. It was about 7:00pm The days were getting longer and I enjoyed having the extra daylight to play.Lighting
As I said before, It was pretty grey, but there was just enough sunlight and blue sky breaking through the clouds to pick up all the little details. I like experimenting with different lighting hence I go out several times a day to do my photography. In doing so I have learned a lot about different lighting and how it can create different moods.Equipment
All my photos are taken with the iPhone 6. Some of my macros are done with a clip on macro lens, but this paticular shot was taken with a camera app designed for the iPhone that I put into macro mode. Camera apps are great because they improve the quality of the iPhone camera.Inspiration
My inspiration is all the little things in nature that we tend to overlook or take for granted. Dandelions for example are seen as pesky and are generally not well thought of. I wanted to show them in a different light so people could appreciate the beauty in them. I inherited my love of nature from my dad. He taught me to see the beauty in things that other people may not see. Whenever I'm out in nature taking photos, I feel a special closeness to my dad. It helps me connect.Editing
The only thing I did to this photo was increase the saturation and brightness slightly to enhance the blue sky. it brought the whole picture to life.In my camera bag
Besides my iPhone, I always, always bring my Olloclip macro lenses. I also bring my tripod, wide angle and fisheye lenses in case I'm in the mood for some landscape photography.Feedback
With any sort of macro photography light is definitely key. Unfortunately though I have found bright light isn't always enough, it has to be at the right level and have a certain warmth to it. My advice is to play around with different times of day and see what works best. My favourite time of day is early morning and evenings, but since I'm not a morning person I tend to shoot mostly as the sun is setting. When shooting flowers, dandelions, etc I usually use a spray bottle to create water droplets. I find the drops add more detail and atmosphere to the image. It's all about evoking a certain feeling for me. I want the person looking at the image to walk away with a sense of peace and tranquility.
