For this series of dance with movement photos with Nais, I needed to use my local photo studio as the height limit in my own home sudio just wouldn't cut it! I needed at least 4 metres of height to enable the fabric to flow without hitting any objects.Time
The time of day was fairly irrelevent for this shot as the studio is blacked out to minimise any ambient light.Lighting
The whole concept about this shot was the lighting. I used a mix of continuous light (lupolight fresnel 650 DayLED) and strobe to freeze the final moment. For this set-up I had the continuous light at 2 o'clock on full power and strobes at 8 o'clock on almost minimal power far max speed and to freeze the action. The camera was set to 'Rear curtain' sync and I was using shutter speeds of approx. 1 second with Mirror Lock-up. I used 2 flags to shield the LED from the background as well as from the camera. I also flagged the strobes from the backgorund and the camera, too. So with minimal ambient light, the continuous light just picks up the movement and 1 second later the strobe fires to freeze the motion.Equipment
The Camera, my Nikon D810 was on a tripod, in Manual mode and I had a trigger release to avoid as much movement as possible. For this shoot I had pre-focused on the dancer. I then kept the focus in manual mode throughout. The continuous light was a 650w Lupolight fresnel DayLED and the 2 strobes were elinchrom 500w.Inspiration
I am inspired by creativity and always try to push my own limits. My prefered subjects are dancers and so I wanted to create a specific dance shot series where the movement is shown and the final moment is frozen. This photo was just a prolongation of the series. Once the concept and the technical aspects were 'nailed' we moved on to experimenting with props. This pink fabric netting proved an ideal accompanyment to the shoot.Editing
I have a fairly constant workflow and only work with RAW files in lightroom. I just carry out basic adjustments to the dynamic range maximising the details in the highlights and shadows and subsequent adjustments to avoid 'blown-out' highlights. In my camera bag
My studio set-up consists of a Nikon D810 (with battery grip), Gitzo tripod and elinchrom flash trigger and strobes. I find I am also now using a Daylight balanced LED continuous light set-up to extend the possibilities and add more creativity to the interior shoots.Feedback
This shot is just a variant on a basic long-exposure technique. Instead of using filters in an external setting to reduce the ambient light, I blacked out the studio and then 're-created' the daylight with the Fresnel lamp. You need to ensure that no direct light hits the lens and that the background also stays plain and dark to maximise the contrast. Experimenting with this type of shoot is great fun and the final result can be something completely different to a normal static dance shoot.
