Behind The Lens

Location

The photo shows the Lamayuru monastery in Ladakh. Ladakh is a region in northern India, located in the Himalaya ranges. The monastery is situated on the Srinigar-Leh-Highwary at a height of 3,510 metres (11,520 ft).

Time

The picture is a scan from a slide which was taken almost 30 years ago, so I do not remember the exact time. I assume it was late morning.

Lighting

Most of the day it was cloudy, but just when we made a stop at a vista point to take some pictures of the monastery, the sun broke through the clouds and illuminated the monastery like a gigantic spotlight. This light lasted only for a few minutes, then this magical moment passed.

Equipment

At that time, I used a Pentax ME super. This shot was probably taken with my Tokina AT-X 28-85/3.5-4.5 lens. For my travels, I used Kodakchrome 200 as my standard film. The picture was taken hand held.

Inspiration

Prior to the trip, I already had seen pictures of this pittoresque monastery, so when we made the stop at the vista point before we visited the monastery, I already expected this view. Luckily, just in time the sun broke through the clouds and created a very beautiful view. The monastery was bathed in light while the surroundings were only lighted with the indirect light through the clouds.

Editing

This is a scan from an almost 30 year old slide. I only did remove some dust etc and adapted the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I use an Olympus E-M1 Mk. II, with a bunch of lenses. As most lenses in the micro four thirds system are so small and light, it is easier to carry (more of) them with you without braking your back.

Feedback

Photography literally means "painting with light", so a crucial part of creating an interesting picture is the right light. Sometimes - as in this picture - you have to be lucky to get some great light, but it pays off to think about the lighting conditions in advance and - if possible - plan to take pictures at times where the chance to get some great light is higher, lilke early in the morning or late in the afternoon, or before/after a thunderstorm etc.
