Night photography in Monument Valley Arizona-Utah. There was a full moon lighting the landscape which gave it a very daytime look during my 1 minute or more exposures. I like the contrast of look from a daytime landscape and a night sky and plan to this more often with other landscapes.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Monument Valley in Arizona/Utah. It wasn't in the official park, but was one you can see on the way to the Monument Valley park.

Time

Time of day was around 11pm with a full moon lighting the entire scene/foreground and monument.

Lighting

The long exposure is what made the stars visible, while the moonlight spilling over the monument and the foreground came through as practically a daylight scene.

Equipment

I shoot on film, Using a Canon F1n, fuji provia 400 iso film, tripod and canon 50mm lens. The shutter release I had to hold for the duration of a minute since my camera only has an 8 second automatic shutter.

Inspiration

Going to new places and trying new techniques of capturing the world is often part of my inspiration for non-edited photos, where often times the photos i take very normally and straight forward I will use for digital manipulation. Experimenting is often the best way to find new ways to photograph the world and show an almost surreal version of life.

Editing

In this photograph there was no major post processing apart from just a bit of contrast adjustment and crunching the blacks to clean up the grain.

In my camera bag

Bag often consists of camera (obviously), an ND set and soft grad ND's, polarizer, 35mm, 50mm and 75-200mm macro focus lens, close up filters, tripod, shutter release, additional film, light meter, and lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

Having an automatic timer for your shutter release will make this process much easier and better for consistency. I took various photos of these monuments with different times that i had to count out in my head and that's not necessarily the best for precision.
