Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the St. Anthony's Church. It is located between township road 92 and 90 on the 885 highway on the way to Etzikom, Alberta.

Time

I have visited this church before but it was not my intended subject this evening. I planned on taking pictures of an abandoned barn further down the highway but the storm came rolling in which I did not expect so I stopped at St. Anthony's Church before I missed the chance to take a picture. This was taken on Nov 1, 2015 at 6:10 pm (according to another camera). My camera date said 5:34am and I know that is wrong since I am not a morning person.

Lighting

I wanted the amazing colours the sunset was providing to highlight or surround the church but have the darker storm clouds appear to be creeping in from the side. I had taken lots of pictures at different angles and decided this was one my favorite pictures out of them.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 camera with a 18 - 105 MM lens on a manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

The storm and sunset inspired me to take this photo. I was on my way to take some pictures of an abandoned barn but this sunset and storm kept getting better by the minute. I kept an eye on it while driving and I finally thought to myself "I need to capture this before it is gone". St. Anthony's Church was the closet location to me and that I figured would make a decent picture so I drove to it and managed to capture the beauty of the storm, sunset and the church at the same time.

Editing

I had just learned how to do HDR's and merge photographs together a few days before this picture was taken so this is 3 pictures merged into one. I took one picture to capture the beauty of the church, one for the sunset and one for the storm. I found that the picture was a little brighter that what I remembered so I dropped the exposure by 1 then did a clarity and sharpness on it.

In my camera bag

My 18-105 mm lens is always in my camera bag since it is the lens I use the most. I take my night shot pictures, landscape and sunset pictures with this lens. The next thing I make sure is in my bag is a lens cleaning kit. I live an area of Alberta where it can be windy and dusty. The last thing I want as a photographer is a dirty lens while being 2-3 hours from home. Once I have those in my main bag with my camera then I tend to carry another bag which contains my telephoto and macro lens. I have been out taking pictures and wished I had my other lenses with me. They remain in my truck in a second bag so they are accessible if I find a need for them.

Feedback

I like to plan ahead because I have found that the perfect time to take a picture goes pretty fast and you don't want to be setting up when you should be taking pictures. I usually scout out locations then mark them on my GPS so I can find my way back to them or drive to another destination if I find that situations appear to be changing. I find that I can plan and take great pictures with landscape and sunset photography but variables can change fast so one must be prepared to adapt and change with it. I have seen what seemed like a fairly poor sunset turn into an amazing one so I like to have my camera ready and setup ahead of time. I find this helps with setup and I can be taking pictures sooner. My advice to others is plan ahead, be prepared to adapt to any changes that may happen, take lots of pictures because one can learn from mistakes and have fun.
