Behind The Lens
Location
This photograph was taken outdoors in rural Indiana. The old weathered board was held up between a 5 gallon bucket and a large rock. A soybean field and treeline make up the background.Time
It was taken in the early afternoon on a hot and sunny summer day.Lighting
I wanted to get the look of sunlight reflecting off of water and tried several different methods. In this shot I used a diffuser to block the harsh mid day light coming in from overhead. A gold reflector was then used to kick in light from below.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon T5 with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I used a Slik tripod and a remote shutter release to minimize movement.Inspiration
The viewbug HDR objects contest was the inspiration for taking this photo. The contests have inspired me to try many new things that I wouldn't have tried before. This image is one of my first attempts to create a high dynamic range photo. I used the lures because they have a bit of character and are very colorful. The fact that they are so reflective necessitated the use of HDR processing and solidified my decision to use them for the picture.Editing
I combined three bracketed frames using HDR luminance then made some minor final adjustments using photoshop. In my camera bag
A Canon t5, a Canon 50mm lens, a remote shutter release, an extra memory card and an extra battery are always in the bag. During the night time a Samyang 16mm f/2.0 is in it as well.Feedback
Still life photography can be a lot of fun. It allows you the time needed to try different angles, lighting, exposures, different depths of field and different compositions. Find something interesting and take your time to craft the shot that's pleasing to you.
