Behind The Lens

Location

I took this self portrait shot during one of my many tours in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was staying a dear friends' home converted studio. It was our first time being at his new place since he had just moved there.

Time

I remember waking up that morning, trying to determine what I was going to do for my self portrait set for that week. I typically try to do a set a week, sometimes I do more and sometimes I get busy and miss a week, you know how that can be. Anyway, I was up and my partner (who is also a talented photographer) helped assisted me with the light set up. It was probably around mid-day when I finally started shooting. It was pretty hard, since it is a self portrait, you have to determine EVERYTHING.

Lighting

I find this lighting one of the simplest but ultimately my favorite setup. It's just a one light setup with a soft box. I tend to prefer shadows, when it comes to shooting so it really helped capture the mood of the series.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D, with a 24-70 simga 2.8 lens. Tripod of course, and alien bee light with buff soft box.

Inspiration

Well, like I said above: I try to do a self portrait set once a week. I usually post most of self portrait work on my Patreon account. So I would say my fans inspired me to take this photo. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be motivated to spend hours getting ready ( hair & makeup), setting up the gear, understanding where my focus will be at, what mood I want to convey. I really do owe it my fans and all that has supported me in my modeling and photography career so far. Editing

As a photographer, I prefer to keep my photos in the most rawest of ways. I really want my work to speak out for itself. So I used very little post processing besides converting it to black & white, it's as a raw as it should be.

In my camera bag

I just started recently carrying a camera bag, normally I would just bring my camera and use what is around me but I have started to add a portrait lens in the mix. Simple is better for me. Less distraction from what I'm shooting and it helps me focus on what I really intended.

Feedback

If you are trying to capture a self portrait, I believe the more "you" it shows the better of you will be. I could write a full post about how lighting, setup, but I feel that if you are lacking motivating and self understanding you should be content with what becomes of it. I will say that, patience is very key because you really never know what is going to become of it and as long you have fun and enjoy it that what should matter.
