Behind The Lens

Location
I like to visit the gypsy markets in Portugal because it's realy someting different then what I am used to in my home country Holland! The shouting into the crowds of the tough market vendors in their black clothes are a wonderful sight to hear and see!
Time
I took this photo at about 11 O'Clock in the morning.
Lighting
The lighting was great because I took this photo in the filtered light of the cloths covering the market to protect them against the strong sun. This kind of light is good and easy at practically any camera setting...
Equipment
I have a Lumix DMC-TZ60, all my photos are taken with this little miracle of a camera...The best thing about this camera is that it has a good Leica lens and it is very easy to carry with you because it practically fits in your back pocket.
Inspiration
A gypsy market in Portugal is an organised loud and pushy chaos... until I saw this market vendor organising her goods with such loving care. I knew I had very little time to capture this candid moment. Black and white was an obvious choice for me and I quickly decided to set my camera, trying to stay out of her way, not to be noticed. I was able to shoot just a few photos of this wonderful moment until new custumers came and changed the mood completely...
Editing
I took this photo in black and white and post-processed it in Lightroom. I worked on many details of the photo to get the light intensity and shadows just right.
In my camera bag
I don't have a bag of equipment at all, only my Lumix DMC-TZ60, a wonderful intelligent automatic pocketcamera wich practically fits in my backpocket. It shows that you do not have to use expensive and big cameras to achieve nice results...
Feedback
If you want to take a candid photo you have to be creative... look for a place to hide behind or like this one when there is nowhere to hide; take it "from the hip" while you look to the other side, not to attrack the attention of your subject. I was holding my camera in one hand, beside my leg because I was standing excactly in front of this market vendor in plain sight. I always feel a little uncomfortable photographing people I don't know, so I try to take candid photos to avoid the eye contact. Because you can't plan the framing, you always have to crop a blind shot, that's why you have to shoot a wider area then the result you want to achieve. The settings of your camera can be done by choosing another subject at the same distance and the same light intensity, nearby the subject you eventually want to shoot... Crop and edit the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
