Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken as a final piece for my degree at university of south wales. I soent months travelling to and from Boys village, Barry, South Wales, Britain just to get the right shot.

Time

After months of scouting and several previous attempts, I finally managed to get this picture during a break in the British cloud just as the midday sun was peaking through.

Lighting

For this lighting I wanted to keep it as basic as possible. I shot on a semi cloudy day just using the ambient light around us and a gold reflector to warm up the cold Welsh day.

Equipment

This shoot was very back to basics. I shot it with my niton d610 and my favourite 50mm 1.4 prime lens and a gold reflector.

Inspiration

I wanted to mix up the way in which sports luxe is presented. I don't like how clean and perfect the advertising imagery for it often is, so decided I would mix things up and create something that is a bit more unique.

Editing

I try not to process my images too much as I feel that often the raw quality of a photograph is lost. I did however use photoshop cs6 to warm up the image slightly and to remove the person holding the reflector from the models reflective sunglasses.

In my camera bag

I try to keep my equipment basic with my nikon d610 body and my 50mm 1.4 prime lens. I don't leave the house without my two reflectors as you never know just when you will need them. I also often carry my macro 40mm 2.8 and my 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 zoom lens as you just never know when you'll need a completely different perspective. My absolute essential piece of kit however, is my hypoallergenic basic first aid kit. As I often shoot on location with models I feel it's vital to keep it in my kit just to reassure myself and the model that we are prepared in case of an emergency.

Feedback

Location is everything! I scout my locations at least three times before I start bringing my models along with me. The first is in the morning, this allows you to see where the first light pours into the location, where your most prominent shadows will be and where you will need an extra boost of light. The second trip I do on a different day at midday, this is when the light is brightest and most harsh, midday sun can create the most beautiful lighting but you need to understand where to be and how to manipulate it as to not wash your images out or capture unforgiving shadows. And the third visit is evening, this is when the sun is setting and, in most locations, is the golden hour. This allows you to pick the absolute best ambient light for what you want to shoot and also means that you won't be following the light with your model as you should have a good idea as to when the light will be where you want, giving you time to set up and wait for the light to come to you!
