Taken on the last night on my road trip around Europe in Bruges, Belgium, using a makeshift tripod, made from a cigarette packet, lighter and pack of gum. I had also been drinking Belgian beer all day, so pretty happy with how this turned out!

Congratulations with this stunning shot in Bruges. I read you was on a tour in Europe and that you drank Belgian beers.. My favorit Belgian beer is Rodenbach. I'm a Belgian citizen (Roeselare), only 30 km. from Bruges. This picture is in the list of best pictures !!! I wil see now all your photos. I hope you will see my album also.
Kind regards,

This shot looks like something out of a story book. You were at the right place, at the right time. Great shot my friend.

Location
This photo was taken in Bruges, Belgium, overlooking one of the canals. I only started photography in March 2016, so being able to capture a moment like this was a big achievement.Time
This was taken around 9 or 10pm so the light was very low at the time making it harder to capture but with a more impressive end resultLighting
The lighting in this image was all natural with the exception of up-lighting on the building itself. These spot lights made for a great reflection on the canal.Equipment
Being new to the photography scene all of my images are captured using my Canon EOS 550D with kit 18-55mm lens. I picked this camera up for €150 while in France, starting my journey into digital photography. I had no other equipment with me so i had to MacGuyver a tripod from a pack of cigarettes and a pack of gum.Inspiration
I was actually on the lookout for a nice beer and happened to find this little bar right across the water from where this image was taken. Just as my beer arrived the lighting was perfect so I snapped off 3 shots and this was my favourite.Editing
There was actually very little post processing done on this image. I boosted the contrast and clarity a little and tweaked the white balance. Dropped some highlights and boosted some shadows and with a little sharpening I was done.In my camera bag
As mentioned I am still fairly new to the game so my bag is a little light. I have my trusty Canon EOS 550D with kit 18-55mm lens, a couple of spare batteries and memory cards and my belt clip attachment which is my favourite method of having my camera to hand. I have recently purchased a tripod so that will be coming with me in future, especially at night!Feedback
To capture an image like this timing is everything so choosing the right moment to hit the shutter is key. At this time of night the ambient light changes pretty quickly so its best to arrive early and take a few shots as the light changes. I arrived pretty late for this shot and took only 3 shots to get this one, so i got lucky. Pack ahead and remember to bring a tripod for nice steady night shots, unlike me as i had to improvise! Know your camera and its settings and what its capable of. I read my cameras manual front to back while messing around and taking test shots to really understand the features. All of my images are taken in Manual mode which really allows me to adjust my camera the way I want the image to appear. And lastly I always shoot in RAW which allows me some flexibility in post-production. Thankfully this image took very little in post, resulting in a natural and well represented shot.
