I got this shot in the Financial District of San Francisco. At the time (early 2016) bike rental was a "new" idea and, in a sense, a new application of technology where users could pay with a card on the street! Can you imagine?Time
This shot was mid-morning, the sun was out but blocked by the skyscrapers of downtown San Francisco.Lighting
Since it was downtown, the shadows of the buildings provided great natural light and opportunities. I consider myself an "urban" photographer, shooting natural light, handheld camera, taking opportunities as they come.Equipment
Handheld Canon Rebel T3 with the stock 55-250 lens, nothing fancy.Inspiration
There were actually a couple of things that drew me to this image. First, the bike rack was a new installation, but then, it was also a "new" service. At that time, it was a new application of technology to use a card at the site to rent a bike, pay a parking meter, etc. So that was intriguing. Beyond that, and I can't say that I consciously recognized it at the time, the way the bikes were lined up and the reflection of the light on the seats and fenders add to the uniformity of the lined up bicycles.Editing
I try to do as little as possible but when I do, I use Lightroom to tweak and crop. Other than that, I hope the images capture what I see.In my camera bag
As I said before, I consider myself more of an urban photographer. I carry my Canon Rebel T6, an extra battery and stock lenses.Feedback
I'm really more of a hobbyist, I love to shoot outdoors, particularly outdoor events (street fairs, sporting events, etc). I've heard the pros say over and over, to get better, you have shoot the shots. This particular image was shot more on a whim than a plan. I happened to see it as I was walking by. A lot of my better images were taken on a whim.
