Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. Its of the San Francisco waterfront lit up for the Super Bowl.

Time

It was taken at 1am in the morning February 7 2016, the day of Super Bowl 50. You can see some of the Super Bowl 50 emblems lit up on the buildings. I entered the Island as everyone was leaving after the Super Bowl parties on Treasure Island. I went there to try to get a better picture of one I took the previous night which include the Bay bridge. I could include the Bridge this night because of Concert at AT&T park. all the stadium light were on under the bridge so I focused on the waterfront. The water was calm and I was able to capture the reflections off the water. I haven't seen any other pictures of this view at night of the city lit up for the Super Bowl although they may be out there.

Lighting

My main goal was to get the the refection of colors off the water and try to get star effect from some the lights. I used and ISO of 100 and F16 with a 4 minute exposure.

Equipment

Nikon D810, 24-120 f4 lens with a manfrotto tripod and remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I was looking for something to try out my new camera body and had seen some sunset shots of the water front. I decided I would see what I came up with at night. I worked till 11pm and Treasure Island wasn't far from my work.

Editing

yes processing was done with Light Room CC I adjusted for exposure added 2 stops, reduced the highlights to dim the white lights on the buildings and used clarity and saturation to enhance the colors.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810 body and D750 Body, Nikon 16-35 f4, 24-120, 70-200 and 105 macro lenses. also have and assortment of Formatt filters for landscape Photography

Feedback

My advise on city nightscapes is to explore during the day to find locations to shoot from, It makes it easier to find your way around at night. Planning your shot and having an idea what you want out of your picture. The willingness to adapt to different conditions. Having a very sturdy tripod and remote shutter release is essential.
