Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken down Middlewich canal, close to the town centre where two canals meet

Time

This image was taken at about 10am in the morning, it was the first sunny day for a few weeks and luckily I wasn't in work, so I decided to walk down the canal. The weather was still a little cold but the sun made the sky a really nice colour blue which I had to include in the image.

Lighting

The sun was bright, but it wasn't bright enough to cause any problems with the lighting. It did however reflect badly off the canal water when i moved my tripod around and took a few other shots, so I was luckily enough to take a few shots at this angle!

Equipment

I used my Nikon d5300 with the Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. This was set up on a tripod because I had just bought the B+W 10 stop ND filter and was eager to test it out. Because I was doing a long exposure shot I used an external shutter release to ensure the camera didn't shke

Inspiration

The way the light radiated around the house first caught my eye. This was nearing the end of my walk down the canal and every other house that I had seen was a modern built home, and right at the end was this house with a plaque opposite expaining it's history. It's called Maureen's house, and is listed as a historic building because of it's age and the importance f its position. It is very narrow and has no power or gas inside. The previous owner called Maureen lived in it for many years and when she passed the house lay empty for a number of years. New owners had just taken over and were starting rennovations as I took this photo.

Editing

I made this an HDR imge, that is what has enhanced the colours alot. Many people don't like HDR, but I think it has its place in some photography. This is made up of three images, I over exposed one, took one at normal exposure and another one under exposed. once the HDR image was merged I lifted the vibrancy a fraction, cropped out a small section from the border and that was it!

In my camera bag

I have yet to be able to afford a backup camera as I am travelling and can't earn the same money as back home so I only have the Nikon d5300 body. I have 4 lenses, the Nikkor 18-70mm, Nikkor 55mm-200mm( which i never personally use) the Samyang 8mm fisheye which gives cool warped effects on some photos, and the Nikkor 50mm prime lense. I also have an external shutter release, a timer remote for time lapses, a varied amount of filter sizes and brands and various lens cleaning gear in case of bad luck!

Feedback

Don't be disheartened if you find a nice place to take an image and the weather or light doesn't make it turn out as nice as you want. Sometimes it takes a few visits to get the picture. There is one spot on the canal that I have tried to photograph at sunset over 5 times and everytime it has never been the same as when I went walking one night without my camera! And if you are doing HDR, try your hardest to not move the camera when adjusting the settings, every little bump can move it slightly which may affect your final image!
