I took this photo in North Georgia within the Chattahoochee National Forest. It's found in White county, just outside of Helen. Great place to visit with the family!Time
Without a doubt my favorite image of that day. I met some girlfriends around 9 am to hike the area. This waterfall is at the end of the trail, so it was probably around noon by time we got there. It's not that the trail is long, but with a camera in hand it's hard not to stop and take a picture of nearly everything you come across!Lighting
The skies were bright and blue, but I caught a break as the clouds rolled over the sun for just long enough to get the shot set up and shoot a handful of images. And like that the clouds parted and the bright sun washed the scene out again. Call it luck, but it worked!Equipment
I shot the image with a Pentax K30 and a Sigma 16-50, 2.8 lens. I did bring along my tripod, but there wasn't enough time to get it out, so I propped myself and my camera up on a tree and shot away.Inspiration
I am a huge fan of practically everything outdoors, so you'll find me there often. When I came across this particular scene the log in the foreground really caught my attention. To many it may seem a distraction in the image, but I really felt like it added to the flowing lines of the water near the bottom of the image. It was the connecting object from the rocky foreground to the lush foliage of the surrounding forest. It all just framed the water so perfectly.Editing
I did. A little bit anyways. I sharpened it up a bit and darkened the foliage around the center of the image to help the flowing water pop.In my camera bag
I always have at least two camera bodies in my bag. I am pretty rough on equipment so it's real important for me to have multiples. I typically carry a Pentax K30 and a Pentax K20D, but sometimes I have both of my Pentax K30 bodies. I'm a huge fan of Sigma lenses, so I have a 17-50 2.8, 70-300 macro super and a 28-200 in my bag at all times. I also keep a Pentax 50mm 1.8 in my bag for fun stuff. It weighs next to nothing and can fit in your pocket, so why not keep it in the bag, especially at that aperture! I also keep a Tiffen polarizer and a Tiffen neutral density filter in my bag. Those come in handy FAR more than people think.Feedback
Weather is key here. This area is best viewed in the summer and summer in the South can mean any number of things. My advice, is to shoot in the early morning or late in the afternoon. If you can't make it at those times, uses filters such as a polarizer or neutral density filter to cut down on the glare of the sun and the reflections on the water.
