Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in the deep forest of Yakushima, and island in southern Japan. It’s an ancient ecosystem inhabited by deer, green pigeons, primordial cedars, and of course the Yakushima macaw. They are a special monkey only found in Yakushima!
Time
I remember it was around noon when I took the photo. At the time I was so focused on just taking photos I forgot all about time. I must have been there for at least an hour trying to find the best angle, the best light, the best parts of what a great photo should be! The photo was taken at 12:01 pm on March 16, 2016.
Lighting
The photo was lit solely by natural light. The sun was high but the monkeys were partially shaded by the trees, thus the dramatic lighting!
Equipment
I used a Canon 7d mark ii paired with a Canon 55-250mm STM, Nothing too fancy!
Inspiration
I’ve been wanting to take photos of Yakushima wildlife for a while now, just because I think the animals here are simply gorgeous creatures. We happened to be driving around the island when I spotted a whole group of monkeys (perhaps 5 families) along the mountain road, resting under some trees. I grabbed my camera and slowly got closer until I got a photo I was happy with! Most of my photos are spontaneous and are usually unplanned, just in the moment!
Editing
Not much, just some sharpening, a little boosted contrast and boosted brightness.
In my camera bag
I usually carry a Canon 7d mark ii as my main shooter and a samyang 14mm, a Canon 55-250mm STM and a Canon 50mm f1.8 STM as my lenses. I also carry a Manfrotto 190XPRO tripod and ball head.
Feedback
It takes patience to get a good shot of animals. With wild animals it's necessary to try to intuitively communicate with them, at least to let them know you're not going to harm them. Take the shot from a low angle, at the eye-level of the animal, if possible. Also, only focus on the interesting aspects of the scene created by the animal(s) rather than trying to get everything in the frame. I would say the best tip of all is to just go and shoot!!! I learned all my techniques from trial and error. I think thats the best way to learn! Just keep taking photos!!
