Behind The Lens

Location
While out touring Northern Ireland, we stopped to see a bit of the Antrim Coast on the way to the Giant's Causeway. Perched high up on a cliff, were some of the world's most friendly cows. We pulled over, eager to play tourist and "pet some real Irish cows!" As it turns out, the cows were more than willing to oblige... they were ready to lick anything or anyone along the fence line.
Time
With the sun high overhead at mid-day, I didn't think much about photography at this site. I was too busy gearing up for a little photoshoot at Giant's Causeway down the road, and didn't even pull my camera out at first. However, I am glad I did decide to give it a go. These guys made for some precious memories!
Lighting
Since it was so bright outside, I took the exposure down a bit, especially for my upward shots like this one, where I would be pointing up even more at the sun.
Equipment
For this trip, and basically all overseas travel, I prefer my small, pocket-friendly powerhouse of a camera - a Sony RX100 Mark III, and a lightweight Manfrotto tripod for the job. I am one to hop in and out of the car on some occasions, and take long hikes on others. Therefore, on impromptu shoots, I love the "toss it in the bag and go" routine. I am always at-the-ready in case something cool begs to be photographed.... like these awesomely hilarious cows!
Inspiration
These funny cows were licking people's jackets, fenceposts, and everything else in their path. It was hysterical to watch, especially from unusual angles. In some of the photographs, I pulled out a 5" x 7" frame as a prop to add to their humorous portraits. The cows looked pretty cute sticking their tongues out inside the frame!
Editing
Regarding post-processing, I simply touched up the basics a bit - color, detail, and exposure in Nik Color FX Pro. The image looked pretty nice in-camera, but I felt that the overly bright sky could use a tad more darkening, and I wanted to bring out the detail on the cow's nose a bit more to bring attention to those silly freckles!
In my camera bag
While there are a lot of wonderful cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment to be had in the marketplace, I'm a girl of convenience. I am still a bit of a novice, so while I am learning, I am content to see what I can pull from my super-lightweight, convenient set-up. I want to have everything with me if I should see something that inspires me. Creative, candid shots get my blood pumping. I am so excited about going places - even out to do errands... because who knows what spectacular moments await?!
Feedback
Sometimes we have it in our minds what we plan to photograph on a particular outing. For me, it was the famous Giant's Causeway. While stopping on the side of the road on the way there, this seemed at first as more of an interruption to my plans. However, after a few minutes, it became one of the most fun impromptu shoots I could ask for. I would recommend to anyone who has plans to shoot something in particular when they go out - to find something else along the way, too. Do something planned.... but then also do something NOT planned. Funny how that day turned out... I was actually a bit let-down at the Causeway, anyway, with the thousands of tourists swarming the rock formations,... but I have plenty of joyful photo memories here!
