The photo was taken in the backyard of my home, in Alajuela, Costa Rica. It was one of the first I shoot using a flash. I went with my song to look for little insects to photograph and we found this caterpillar.Time
It was taken during the morning, around 10am. I remember it was a sunny day.Lighting
It was a sunny day. I shoot this one with a flash that I had recently bought. My son helped me holding the flash, the flash was off camera around 30 centimeters away from the subject and 45 degrees up.Equipment
Nikon D7000 with Tokina f/2.8 macro lens and off camera flash.Inspiration
I love macro photography. Most of my pictures are macro. I spent a lot of time during the weekends looking for insects to photograph. Also, I like the the colors of this caterpillar, specially the red and black.Editing
It was shot in RAW, only color adjustments in photoshop and maybe a little cropping. In my camera bag
Nikon D7000, Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lens, Nikon18-55mm and Nikon 50mm f1.8, tripod, flash.Feedback
What is nice about macro photography is that you can find interesting stuff to shoot almost anywhere, most of my macro photos have been taken in my backyard You definitively need a macro lens with at least 1:1 magnification. I recommend using a lens of at least 100mm so you can have more distance between you and your subject, insects get scared very easily. A tripod is very useful, with magnifications of 1:1 and up it is very difficult to keep the camera steady. Also, learn to do manual focus, letting the camera focus for you for macro doesn't work quite well most of the time. Finally, take the picture from different angles so you have different looks to choose from.
