These large, noisy, greedy and aggressive gulls are very unpopular with the residents of Hasting and other seaside towns in the UK. While I was staying in Hastings I wondered why because I found them fascinating to watch and really enjoyed having them very close to me…
Then when I woke on the first morning I heard what we would call 'the dawn chorus'. This was like the sound of a hundred wailing banshees. It was so loud that double glazing did nothing to reduce the volume and it went on from about 5am onwards. I thought it was a bit of a novelty but I can imagine how this would be so annoying if it was every day!
