Location
This scene was shot in the Hudson Valley area in New York State. It's located along a parkway referred to as Seven Lakes Drive. This area stretches from southwest Rockland County to the north at Bear Mountain State Park.Time
Just after sunrise on a crisp, cool morning in October.Lighting
The natural light from the early morning sunrise was just presenting itself over the towering trees surrounding the scene but more specifically the early morning mist made the scene more monumental.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 5d MkII and the 17-40mm Canon L lens mounted on a Manfrotto Tripod.Inspiration
The beauty of the area in any season but more specifically the autumn season. The colors and textures within the scene grabbed my attention.Editing
Due to the early morning lighting conditions I decided to bracket the scene with three separate exposures to sufficiently capture details in the shadows and highlights. The brackets were set at one stop increments and then merged in Photomatix Pro. The result is a 16 bit file which includes the aforementioned details in the highlights and shadows. I then finished processing the scene in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Certainly I start with my 5D Mark II DSLR. I also include my three staple lens: the Tamron 24-70 2.8; a Canon 70-200 mm f4.0 L lens and my "go to" 17-40mm f4 L lens from Canon for all my landscapes. My camera kit is supported on a Manfrotto tripod and ballhead. I include a variety of filters from my circular polarizer from Tiffen to my 9 stop ND filter from B+W.Feedback
Don't just settle for the iconic shots from iconic locations. Explore areas with walking distance to these places. Beautiful scenes can be found almost anywhere. This photo is a perfect example of this... I grew up in the area and thought that I've been almost everywhere in the park. I walked an extra half mile from my intended location and came upon this scene. Glad I did!!
