Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Grand Teton National Park - Wyoming in late may 2016, this is Jackson Lake.

Time

I arrived at Jackson Lake around 9 o'clock A.M, but I walked around for almost 30 minutes, before I set up my tripod and start working on this composition.

Lighting

I will never be tired to say, that early morning and late afternoon are the two best filters you can use with your camera. I was lucky, because that morning the air was really clean despite there was no wind and the light was really warm.

Equipment

I use my Nikon D810 together with the Nikon 24-70mm f2,8. As tripod I had my classical team up: Manfrotto 055CX Pro4 and the unbeatable Acratech Headball. I used the Singh-Ray Vari N Trio as frontal filter.

Inspiration

I saw several pictures of Jackson Lake before my trip and all of them were beautiful, but all similar. As i wrote before, I walked around the lake nearly 30 minutes, before I could find a good spot to work on a different composition. The log in the water, gave me the inspiration of this pic. I thought it could be the difference I was looking for. The 25 seconds long exposure with an aperture of F16 did the rest.

Editing

I normally don't like much post processing in my work, I'd rather prefer to spend my time with my camera than in front of my Mac. I just used ACR to control the contrast and enhance the colors. Exposure and aperture were perfect already. If you use very good quality filters in front of your lens, than you really don't need post processing.

In my camera bag

It depends by the situations, but my normal kit is: Nikon D810 with Nikon 24-70mm f2,8 and Nikon D3 S with the 70-200mm f 2,8. Remote control, filters and extra batteries as well. Sometimes I carry with me some prime lens such as: Nikon 18mm and Nikon 35mm PC f2,8

Feedback

The Grand Teton National Park trip can be easily planned, because is very well known and you can find a lot of info on the web, so you already know the most famous spots. The key is to be there at the right time of the day: early morning and late afternoon. Like I did, walking around to find the right spot is another important part to get a different capture from the thousands you can find on the web. Experimenting is the other key to get a great composition.
