The Newport Harbor Lighthouse (known locally as the Goat Island Light) is at the northern tip of a small linear island that helps protect the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island. It’s near the Hyatt Regency Newport hotel. The original light at this location was built in 1823. After a few years, it was determined the light would be better further out the shoal, so a breakwater was built and the current light was completed in 1842 (and the original light was moved to Prudence Island where it still stands today).

In the1970s the area between the lighthouse and the island was filled in, and the hotel was
developed on the ‘new’ land area. The area around the light is accessible, but the lighthouse itself is not open to the public. Or, if you want a more distant shot, you could shoot from the causeway – and feet the Newport Bridge in the background.

The island has a nice walkway along most of the perimeter with great views out into Narragansett Bay. – Great for a nice walk. My wife and I spent a very nice afternoon there, and she was very patient (as she very often is), when I spent awhile shooting the light. But it was a kind of bland cloudless day, so I played a bit with my image, adding some late afternoon warmth and a little glow at the horizon.
