Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Valpolicella, in the "parco delle cascate di Molina" - a park of waterfalls. It's a fantastic place, you can climb always deeper into the gorge passing creeks, waterfalls and cascades surrounded by a cool green forest

Time

It was in the late afternoon on a very hot day. Just before sunset. I have been hiking the whole day and was quite exhausted. But I knew this place must be special and so I went. In the peace of this place energies and happiness came back...

Lighting

the natural light there was perfect in this moment - in the late afternoon there are not anymore those strong contrasts between lights and shadows. It was a smooth warm light, I didn't have to add nothing.

Equipment

My Nikon D600, of course a tripod. I wanted this smooth texture of the water the long exposure makes.

Inspiration

the peace of the place

Editing

just a little - I only make raw pics so of course I had to pass it through Lightroom and made my standard adjustments

In my camera bag

Of course my camera D600 (or now my brand new D810...). The rest depends on where I go. For such a picture a tripod is needed, my 24/120 mm lens. Sometimes I take also my 85 mm lens for people, my 14/24 lens for wideangle landscapes, my 105 mm lens for Macro. But never all together... I prefer to travel light since most of the time I walk or hike a lot. and never forget a bottle of water...

Feedback

Difficult to say - you need of course a good camera and, most important, a tripod. Experiment which ISO/aperture/time combination brings the best results. I normally put a very low ISO because this automatically with poor light will put the aperture time higher. The effect becomes even more intense with a small focal aperture (high number such as 14 or 18). Thus you will arrive to need an exposure time of 30 seconds or more which gives you the smoothness of the water.
