I took this picture at the Jökulsárlón Beach on Iceland.Time
27.02.2016 12 o'clockLighting
I had to play a lot with the exposure time and when to take the shot. I took the time when the waves stopped coming towards me and going back to the ocean....about 2 seconds. You can also try to do a series shot, set the time to 1 or 2 seconds, and take a series of pictures when the wave almost hit the ice. After looking at the picutres of the series shot you'll be able to find out what's best for you.Equipment
Sony A7II, Sony/Zeiss 16-35 f/4, Rollei C5i Tripod, Haida ND Filter 100 SeriesInspiration
One of the most incredible natural spectacles I've seen is definitely the glacial lake Jökulsárlón in Iceland. A lake that developed out of a receding glacier, with swimming icebergs in it, with different sizes and colors, seeing this is absolutely breathtaking. But this isn't all, this lake also has an exit to the Atlantic Ocean, so these icebergs are driven out of the lake and into the ocean, where the waves carry the icebergs back to the black sand beach Breiðamerkursandur. Just take a second to imagine this, it's unbelievable! So of course this is a photographic paradise, on the one side a lake with swimming icebergs, mountains with a glacier in the back. On the other side the ocean with the black sand beach where these icebergs and icepieces are lying. (In the background of this image you see a very big iceberg with an amazing color) Just one downside: A lot of tourists and tripods everywhere.Editing
I made the sky a bit more dramatic, the waves a bit smoother and added contrast. In my camera bag
- Sony A7II - Sony/Zeiss 16-35 f/4 (most important lens for me) - Sony FE 27-70 - Rollei C5i or Compact traveler Tripod (both are very compact!) - Haida and Nisi Filters, 100mm System and a Circular Polarizer - Accessoirs, Batteries, Rain Cover, LED Lights, Cleaning stuff, - Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (only for astro) - Samyang 85 f/1.4 (for portraits) - Minolta 50mm f/1.4 (for portraits)Feedback
- Find a piece of ice which will be hit by the waves, but which is heavy enough that it won't move. Position your camera close to it. - Look at your angle: Do you want the waves to do straigt lines in the back? How is the Ice lit up by the sun? Take some shots with your smartphone first from 4-6 different angles and decide which you want. - Look for the waves and wait for them to go back in the ocean, that's the moment to press the shutter! Then you can capture the beautiful movement of the white waves on the black sand back to the ocean for this smokey effect.
