Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in Arches National Park, Utah, USA.

Time

The picture was taken in the afternoon. It was a four hour road trip. By the time we arrived at Arches National Park, it was in the afternoon. We were tired but also overwhelmed by how beautiful the scene was. The snow mountain at background just amazing with contrast of red rocks.

Lighting

This is pure nature light. The sunlight was so bright that I had to tune down the light off for compensation.

Equipment

I was using Nikon D80 with 35mm lens, handhold.

Inspiration

I was walking around taking some mountain and rock pictures, when I noticed the snow mountain far away. I realized that the huge red rock, blue sky and the white snow mountain makes a great contrast. When composing the shot, I used the one third rule and make sure leave enough space for the mountains at background to stand out.

Editing

Yes. I used Photoshop Elements 12 for post processing. The sunlight was pretty bright at Utah summer afternoon. The raw picture was white out because of the haze. Therefore I removed the haze in the post processing to bring out those beautiful nature colors. Meanwhile, I tried not to over done it.

In my camera bag

At the time of photo, I used Nikon D80. Later I upgrade to Nikon D7000. I tried to have lens to cover all the scenes. So I have a 80-200mm/2.8 AF-ED telescope so long distance objects. It's not VR but very fast and sharp lens. I have a monopod in my car to support it. I also use a Tokina 10-20mm/2.8 for wide angle, and 35mm/1.8 prime just for fun.

Feedback

One thing I learned from taking landscaping and scene pictures is that always walk around to find different angles and lights. In this picture, if I didn't walk a few steps to the right, I probably won't notice the beautiful snow mountain in the background. Sometimes you can find such a surprise when see things from different angle.
