It's our tender cat Ducya. She's our topmodel and there is no problem to make close ups from her. Here I used my Canon G1X and 10 dioptries filter

Behind The Lens

Location

This is our cat Ducya (russian name because my wife is from Belarus). This photo has been taken into our appartment at Stavelot(east of Belgium).

Time

Photo taken around 10:00 AM near the window with natural light.Ducya was looking for flying birds

Lighting

I make photos since I am 14.I am now 56.I always pay attention to the most natural light. Here was it perfect, not to hard.Ducya was looking to the sky.You see it into her blue eye.Funny, you also see in the middle of it leaves a cherry tomato tree that was in front of her.

Equipment

Normally I work in analogic(since more than 40 years) using a 6x7 Mamiya RZ ProII and a 4x5 inches Horseman FA camera.I meanwhile have a little Canon G1X first generation.Due to the fact this camera has no real macro program,I used a 10 dioptries macro filter. Our cat Ducya is a real topmodel(I make photos of her since she's 6 WEEKS old-now 5 years) and doesn't move when I am even VERY close to her.In this case around 15 cms.So this picture has been taken handheld, without artificial light, without tripod and without cropping the photo.

Inspiration

I was pro during more than 12 years. It was my second job.First was technical assistant inside a papermill here in Belgium. When I lost my job in 2009-after nearly 30 years) I had to sale nearly all my cameras (Canon T90 and Eos 1N) and lenses ((Canon 16-35,28-80,70-200,300 2.8 and 4.0).I only hold Mamiya RZ ProII,4x5 inches camera and little Canon G1X.My approach of photography is totally different now comparing to the past.I only take some pictures per month, only when I see VERY nice or interesting things. When I saw Ducya at the window,I came to her.She looked at me and turned again her face to the window, very interested to catch flying swallows. And I saw her blue eye with the reflection inside it.I came slowly to her and took the photo.A simply magic moment

Editing

I use Photoshop Element.Like I generally do is to very slighly modify the contrast and tone levels scale

In my camera bag

I have a Canon G1X,a Mamiya RZ ProII with 4 lenses (50,110,250,360 mm),a 4x5 inches Horseman FA with 3 lenses(65,150,210) + 6x12 Horseman film back,a Gitzo tripod,a Minolta light and flashmeter,a Quantum Flash + Turbo battery.Also a Gopro Hero 4 Black Edition

Feedback

My advices for this type of photo:pay attention to the light, try to understand it.If your eyes see it's nice,it will be nice on the photo.Cameras don't like hard and complicated lights.Always put your camera at the head level of your cat or dog,so the camera will be associated to your face and not considered like a "dangerous weapon".DON'T use flash.Only natural light
