Behind The Lens

Location

This self-portrait was taken at home in Mexico City, exactly in the bathroom because I’d recently bought amazing lights for the bathroom’s mirror.

Time

I remember it was past midnight but I was having insomnia and I had this idea for a long time ago so I decided to take that self-portrait at that time. Taking photos always makes me feel better because through it I can express myself in a way I can’t do in public and also because I can tell different stories in each photograph.

Lighting

When I was thinking about this picture I wanted it to be mysterious. So I decided that having a low light focused just in my face will be a nice idea. Therefore, I just used the lights around the mirror of my bathroom and that light I was holding in the picture which I bought real cheap in a garage sale.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Nikon D700 which I always use since 2013 (jus for the record it’s the second camera I have ever had), the red fabric I’m wearing in my head is actually a mini skirt I found in my closet, I also used a tripod, a remote for the camera and the mirror in the bathroom in front of me and the camera just to check the photo was going well.

Inspiration

This image was kind of inspired in “The Little Red Riding Hood” character and when I was in a garage sale and saw this light I’m holding in the picture, this idea came immediately to my mind.

Editing

I just used the overexpose tool in Photoshop Cs6 to light my face and I also always like to give more contrast if it comes to portraits.

In my camera bag

I always pack my Nikon D7000, 18-300mm and 18-55mm lens, I am actually using the 18-300 lens because it's really easy to get a photograph with it when I'm not that close to something.

Feedback

Well, first of all you need a lot of patience while making a self-portrait because it’s difficult to focus and put all the correct settings if you are the photographer and the model. Also it’s better to use a tripod because you can place it wherever you want. I always draw my idea before doing it, I draw every single object I’ll use for the photo, including clothes and makeup. But in my opinion, the most important thing you need while taking any type of photo is to capture what people usually don’t see, it is to find a point of view that no one’s able to see but you are and then show it to the world.
