Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting family in Jamaica and they took me to their favorite restaurant, Little Ochie, located in the south coast fishing community of Alligator Pond. This is the view looking down the beach from the restaurant. (My family actually lives on the other side of the most distant ridge in the photo.)

Time

It was taken late in the evening. The softness of the photo is due to the picture being taken handheld (bracing it against a railing as best I could) at a relatively low shutter speed to compensate for the lack of light. I took about 30 shots to capture one without a bunch of people in the frame.

Lighting

There wasn't much, but I think the softness adds to the beauty of the shot.

Equipment

It was shot with my trusty 80D and a Tamron 28-75mm. I was using HDR mode on the lowest setting (to enhance the light more than the colors).

Inspiration

The colors are just staggering. Jamaica is a bit like this everywhere, splashes of color on every house and business. The natural beauty mixed with the brightly painted boats lined up just so.... I couldn't have planned it much better. I like the fact that the picture, while beautiful, is a real shot of Jamaica. In other words, if you look carefully you can see the poverty along with the breathtaking beauty that makes Jamaica what it is today.

Editing

The goal was simply to bring out the natural colors in the scene. There was really no need to add anything.

In my camera bag

I have an odd assortment of lenses. I am on a fairly tight budget so my gear is a collection of the best gear I can afford. On this trip I brought my Canon 80D, Benro tripod, a pile of filters, 4 lenses including my fisheye Rokinon 8mm, Tokina 11-16, the aforementioned 28-75 and a Canon 70-200. I also took my Autel Robotics drone which shoots excellent 4k video and 12mp stills. I always pack a Laptop with a copy of Creative Cloud on it for doing rough edits from my room. While there (for almost 2 weeks) I took over 2300 stills and 10 hours of video.

Feedback

When traveling always be ready for that shot that sneaks up on you and never be afraid to look a bit foolish. I was propped across a table, bracing my arms on a railing in the restaurant pavilion, to get this shot. At the time I was angry that I left the tripod in my room, but I think in the end it was a better shot without it.
