Through the documentation of animals in captivity such as in zoos, pet stores, slaughterhouses, and racetracks, the inhumane act of imprisoning animals will be brought to light. Majestic beings are taken from their habitat, placed in smaller environments, and isolated in cages taking away their ability to live freely. American culture has become too accustomed to the use of animals as a commodity, and their basic rights as living beings has been overlooked. The mission of this body of work is to speak out for those captive animals who have no voice by enlightening others that animals in captivity deserve greater recognition, awareness, and compassion.

Behind The Lens

Location

I've taken this photo at Tacoma, WA Point Defiance's Zoo.

Time

This was during Mid-day. Exact time I can't recall.

Lighting

Natural lighting in the shade.

Equipment

Cannon 7D, on a tripod, with a 24-70 lends.

Inspiration

This photo was taken for my Thesis work call "Captivity" during my time at the Art institute of the Seattle. The environment where the Hawk is living in sadden me, because he was living in a small shed with a painted wall of a field. It broke my heart seeing this living being held here against its will in an environment with no real tree or any water. My message is for people realize that animals don't belong in zoos and should be able to live in their natural habitat.

Editing

I just changed the image to black and white for my viewers focus on the animal and their living situation.

In my camera bag

70-200mm 100-400mm 24-70mm 50mm prime lens. Tripod Canon 7D
