Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the beautiful Mount Carmel in Israel. When I see a bird, I can stop for hours until I have a photo that I am satisfied with.

Time

I love to take my photos at the brightest time of day, when I can zoom in and not have to worry too much about keeping the camera steady. I saw the Griffon Vulture settled down at noon, and luckily he was facing the sun, so it was a great opportunity to shoot a photo.

Lighting

I love to leave my camera on manual mode, so that I have maximum control when it comes to lighting. This allows me to play with the exposure and create a more unique product. However, this method is less successful when it comes to taking quick photos of small, moving creatures, as it can take a while to adjust the shutter speed and ISO to my liking, and this can cause me to miss the chance to take the shot.

Equipment

This was taken on an Olympus SP-100EE. I didn't use any other equipment.

Inspiration

The vulture looked peaceful and elegant, and this contrasts with the common view of a vulture as an archetypal scavanger. I wanted to portray this bird as beautiful, rather than a vicious predator.

Editing

I usually don't process my photos much. This, I bumped up the contrast slightly and increased focus on the vulture's most impressive features, such the blue shades of its face.

In my camera bag

As an amateur photographer, I don't keep anything more than an extra SD card in my bag. I'm always travelling with family when taking photos, so I don't have the time to take out a tripod. My camera doesn't have the ability to change its lens, so any extra weight would be unnecessary.

Feedback

I take more pictures of birds than anything else, and I have found that patience and determination are the key for a more satisfying photo. Birds rarely keep still and it is important to remain as quiet and still as possible when capturing them in the wild. When I can, I don't stop photographing the same bird until I have a photo that I am happy with. Another tip is to follow the bird as much as you can. They may settle in an inconvenient place for your photography, but this often creates an interesting shot that is unlike any of your other photos.
