This picture was taken at a night photography class which i gave in the evening of a beauitiful day in april. It shows the Cologne Cathedral (Dom), the big tower in the rear, the Colonius, and the Hohenzollern Bridge at night.

Wonderful capture. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and wanted to cross the river for a night shot but was put off by the rain. You have captured this extremely well.

Location
I took this picture at the Rhein Boulevard in Cologne.Time
I was giving a lesson in long time exposure at this evening and captured this shot around 9 o'clock in April.Lighting
To capture all of the lights and dark portions in this scene i took 3 pictures with 2 stops of exposure between them to create a HDR file in the postprocess. I like the light in this area, because there is so much dynamic range in it to play around.Equipment
My gear at this evening was a D600 with the Nikon 24-70 2.8 and a tripod.Inspiration
This area is the best in Cologne in terms of good pictures, because of the Cologne Cathedral/Dom. At this evening i wanted to get the three big structures into a good compesition, but with a clear focus on the cathedral.Editing
With this picture, i used my normal workflow with 3 different exporsures and imported them in Lightroom. After combining them together with the HDR function in Lightroom, i adjusted the lights, so that every details would be visible to the viewer. After that i added a bit of clarity to make it pop a bit more. Getting it leveld was a bit difficult, because there are a lot of line which did confuse the automatic mode of Lightroom, so i had to do it manually. In my camera bag
For this kind of picture, i usually bring along my tripod, my Nikon D600, a external release to reduce vibrations, my Nikon 16-35mm F4 lense, the Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 and the 85mm F1.8. Sometimes i carry the Nikon 70-200mm F 2.8, but normally i don't use it :) It's just to be sure i've got it all covered.Feedback
To take a shot like this, it doesn't need much equipment, it just need the knowledge to reduce the vibrations while taking the shot, putting ISO to 100, to get max quality out of the camera. Composition and 3 pictures to get the ability to create an HDR picture is the key. The post process is easy if you got Lightroom to let it create the HDR. Then play around with the possibilitys in the development module and you will find a good look. It's just important, that you never put a slider to the 100% on the right or left :) Nothing good heapens at 100%, so just don't do it. There should be no movement in an HDR picture, otherwise you get blurry spots after melting it to an HDR picture. You don't want that, because most of the time this need a more detailed retouching in Photoshop.
