I still remember the moment, the light and the smell...It was my second night in Namibia and I woke up early; it was a little bit chilly outside with the promise of a beautiful hot day. As a group we were invited by the lodge owner to join him on an early walk to the cheetahs. He had two large areas - one for 2 female and the other for 2 male cheetahs. We went inside the area of the male cats by foot! Normally people are not allowed to go in by foot. As we approached, or rather they approached us, the guy told us it was okay as long as we stayed at least about 5 or 6 meters in front of the cats - never possition yourself behind them!! They were fed and we let them get used to us being around....Lighting
The sun apeared and gave everything this special warm light. I was lying on the ground as I was able to take this photo of this beatiful big cat in the morning sun - a moment I will never forget!Equipment
I used a Canon 5D MkII with the Canon 100-400 f4.0; no more was neededInspiration
I was inspired by the beauty of the land, the moment, the light and the animalEditing
I shot in RAW and have done no more than some minor post-processing in this case. I was happy with the photo as it was!In my camera bag
I always bring my Canon 5D MkII because I love it and know my way around it. Furthermore I'll cary my Canon 24-105 and my Sigma 70-200. If on a macro trip it will be the Canon 100mm (simply superb!) and the recently discovered Helios. It's amazing what you can do with this vintage lensFeedback
Maybe the best chance of taking a photo like this is going on a photographic tour with a brilliant photographer who knows where to be at the right time of the year and day. And who is willing to share his or her knowledge. For me it was. And then just focus and enjoy!
