I was walking through Burleigh Head National Park (on the Gold Coast - Australia), just seeing what I could find, then out of the corner of my eye I saw something, turned around and there was this little Koala 50 or so metres away, up a tree, by itself. Luckily I had a fairly long lens on so I could get a close look without spooking it. He-she climbed around for a while, while I filmed and photographed it, before deciding it would rather climb down to ground level and run somewhere else. 1st and only time I've personally seen a Koala in that area.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Burleigh Heads National Park, on the Gold Coast.

Time

It was taken around 4pm after leaving another job for the day... thought I'd go to burleigh and see what I could find. Got lucky I'd say.

Lighting

I just made use of the natural sunlight coming through all the tree leaves. I chose this picture specifically over others I took because of the way the light hits the back, side and eye of the Koala. As if it were staged.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 60D with a basic 55-250mm lens, and in place of a tripod I leant against a fence and held steady whilst unknown species of spider crawled over my armm.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the fact that I'm fascinated by wildlife and I was amazed I spotted the little creature from so far away in the corner of my vision.

Editing

Yes, I shot in RAW so the image was pretty bland, I processed it in Photoshop RAW to best match how I remembered it. Nice and vibrant.

In my camera bag

I currently normally take my Canon 60D, a GoPro Hero4 Black, an 18-55mm stock lens, a 55-250 stock lens, a 50mm prime lens, and sometimes a tripod. Although More high end expensive gear would be nice, I make the most of what I've already got, its still better tech than what many famous photographers had the luxury of using.

Feedback

Go out around early morning or mid afternoon, whenever the sun is supposed to be on the way up or way down. Be patient with subject, wait for the best moment, take lots of pics to choose from later on. Spend time in editing to make colours and levels pop appropriately. Use a long lens so you don't freak out the animals.
