Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo just north of Belle River Ontario. We had been visiting a cemetary in Stony Point, Ontario trying to get photos of baby foxes and this was on our way home.

Time

I love this photo. The sun was going down and everything was brushed with gold on Lake St.Clair.

Lighting

Since I am not a professional photographer, I really know nothing about lighting. I tend to look at everything as if I am looking through a view finder and when I happened to turn just a fraction I gasped in delight. Seeing the gold from the setting bathing everything in sight, it was a shot I knew I had to take

Equipment

I did not have my tripod with me, as I often do not use it. I use a Fujifilm HS30 camera on the EXR setting thus I don;t even know the actual settings. I did not use a flash as I was looking directly into the sun and really, who would use a flash with this kind of exceptional natural lighting?

Inspiration

Sunset is one of my favourite times of day to take photographs. There is something about the tranquility of the lake and the sun becoming one. In this instance the adirondack chairs added that feeling of hominess. I can imagine getting up in the morning drinking coffee as the sun comes up behind me, and with this particular shot, I could imagine my husband and I sharing a bottle of wine at the end of a romantic day , watching the sun as it lays its sleepy head on its bed of water.

Editing

Rarely do I post process anything. I may have cropped this photo, but to tell you the truth I don't quite remember. I probably used Feeling Good in the Picasa editor I have as most times it does all the post processing for me.

In my camera bag

My Fujifilm HS30 is my go to camera. It is always with me when I go out to take photos. In a pinch I have my camera in my phone, however I rarely use that. I also have a Canon T3 Rebel and a Nikon D3200 that I use on occasion. I need different lenses if I want to do more than a snapshot however and yes, new camera lenses are on my Christmas wish list. I am at the point now that I want to take my photography in a more hands on direction. I want to learn as much as I can about what my camera's can do.

Feedback

Southern Ontario, particularly around Lake Erie and Lake St.Clair are amazing to take sunset photos. Traipse around into non traditional areas (stay out of the tourist traps) and you can get almost any shot you want. We had stopped at a little rest area with 1 bench where I took this photo that was open to the public. Do not trespass onto private property. Be careful at the waters edge, especially if you are in an area known for riptide's (Point Pelee has major riptide's) and enjoy your surroundings. Remember that Mother Nature is as dangerous as she is beautiful.
