Behind The Lens

Location

This was done at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, NC, US.

Time

I don't remember the exact time of day I shot this, but it was done in open shade, which I was looking for to get the softened light.

Lighting

I wanted open shade since I already had the contrast I wanted between the cat and the background.

Equipment

I typically use a Nikon D300 with a variety of zooms, ranging from 10-20mm zoom up to an 80-400mm zoom. I seldom use flash, but when I do, it's usually to fill in shadow detail. I generally use a tripod when I have the time to set up or when slow-shutter speeds dictate that I do.

Inspiration

I immediately saw the expression and the clean background

Editing

I usually try to limit post-processing to just contrast & exposure control. I sometimes add saturation to the color but try to make it look like I haven't.

In my camera bag

Nothing out of the ordinary. Nikon D-300, a few filters, and enough zooms to cover anything from 20-400mm.

Feedback

Be patient when shooting wildlife. Anticipate what they might do and always be ready. Have a long lens handy.
