Behind The Lens
Location
This is a photo taken in Abisko national park, Sweden, on an aurora-hunting holidayTime
It was 10pm, dark and minus 30 degrees Celsius. The lens kept frosting over. After waiting for an hour in the freezing cold, the aurora finally showed up and lit up the night sky beatifullyLighting
The moon was out (to the left of screen, out of the image) casting a lovely white glow across the snow. The aurora lit up the sky beautifully, and the fire in the teepee created a warm orange glow.Equipment
Shot on a Canon 1D with a tripod and cable release. No flash was needed.Inspiration
I've always been fascinated by the aurora. This was a dream trip to see them in person. We were lucky that it was a good season for solar flare activity.Editing
In Lightroom I brought down the highlights and opened up the shadows to create a more even lighting effect across the imageIn my camera bag
I always take a spare charged battery and a few extra memory cards. Depending on what I expect to see during a trip, I might pack my wide angle lens and telephoto lens to try and capture as much as possible, or I might just bring a standard lens (Canon 15-85mm) as a compromise if I'm packing light (eg for a hiking trip)Feedback
Be patient. Sometimes when the conditions are tough and people around you are packing up and going home, if you stay around for a bit longer you might just capture that magical fleeting moment when all the elements come together.
