Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in my appartment in Montréal.

Time

I took this one at night, but time for this type of photography is not important, beacause all the light is controled by you. This is studio photography.

Lighting

The light must not come from too many spots, because for each spot you will put, there will be one more reflection in the oil drops. So my favorite option is to put one spot, at the heigh of the glass your drops are on. Or you can put more spots at an afar distance to see less the reflection in the drop.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D5200 and a lens Nikkor 18-140 DX. I now use macro lens for this type of shot but at the time I had only this and it work well at 140mm the closest you can of the drops. I also use a sturdy tripod that can go 180 degree down to be directly over the glass.

Inspiration

I saw a picture like this one and wanted to try it for myself. After many experimentation, I found out that oil drops works better than water and also that a colored background make it all the more awesome!

Editing

I usually process my images by Lightroom, but nothing more than the contrast, white balance and a little color enhancement.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D5200 with a 18-140mm lens, which I think is the most versatile. It is also very important to have a good lens cleaner, it can save a shot. A tripod is also essential for almost any good shot, so when I dont have my big one, I have a little Manfrotto tripod, which is very sturdy for its size.

Feedback

For this kind of picture my set up goes like this: you place your background on the table or the floor (depending on how high your tripod can go) and you place a glass between 15cm and 30cm over the background. You then put the oil drops on the glass. One tip for this: Don't try to control it too much. My best shots were always when the drops were random. Finally the camera must be direcly over the glass so the focus can be on all the drops equal.
